Feb 14, 1929 — Sep 15, 2023
Southaven
William Sultan Donald, Jr., 94, of Southaven, Mississippi, was born on February 14, 1929, to the late William Sultan Donald, Sr., and Clara Maude Cain Donald. He went to be with his Lord on September 15, 2023. He was born in Sallis, Mississippi, and grew up in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Those close to Mr. Donald knew him as "WS", "Coach Donald", "Coach", "Pop", or "Dad".
WS was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, who loved his family with a fierce intensity and passion. He would use this fierce intensity and passion during his career as a high school coach and teacher for over four decades. He had numerous coaching achievements during his long career including: undefeated track seasons and state football titles at Horn Lake High School in DeSoto County, back to back to back state track championships (1986, 1987, 1988) at Wooddale High School in Memphis, awarded the 1984 National High School Track Coach of the Year, awarded the 1989 National Coach of the Year by Scholastic Magazine, and inducted into the Delta State University Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999. Coach Donald left a lasting impression on all his former students and athletes during his decades long teaching and coaching career.
After spending some time fishing and enjoying the retired life, WS's restlessness led him back to the workforce for another 15 years at the IRS.
Coach Donald's competitive spirit drove him to compete in the Mississippi and Tennessee Senior Olympic Games, where he won numerous medals in track and field events. He was elected into the Mississippi Senior Olympics Hall of Fame in 2013.
WS is survived by his loving wife, Betty Donald; two sons, Tommy Donald (Kim) and Bill Donald (Jennifer); stepchildren, Renae Chambliss, Bobby Miller Jr. (Penny), Linda Brooks, and Kevin Koch; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Francis Donald Williams and Mary Donald Flint, and his son in law Shorty Chambliss.
