Obituary

Sharon Bernstein passed away on March 17, 2020 in hospice care at St Francis Hospital after a long battle with MS and a short, more recent illness, surrounded by her sister, Saundra and her son, Kevin.

Born March 17, 1945 in Memphis, TN to Florence and Berny Messinger, Sharon was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Bob Bernstein with whom she shared many years of happiness. Sharon met Bob, who was originally from Chicago, when they were introduced in Memphis by a mutual friend while living in the same apartment complex a few blocks from the Memphis Jewish Community Center. They married on April 10, 1976 at Beth Sholom Synagogue when it was on Sanderlin.

She is survived by her children Kevin Bernstein of Memphis, Heidi Bernstein Marony, and Jill Bernstein Zimbler, both of the Chicago area as well as 4 grandchildren, Eli and Benjamin Bernstein, Dylan Marony and Isabella Zimbler. She is survived by her sister, Saundra Messinger of New York.

Sharon graduated from Central High School in Memphis in 1963 and attended the then Memphis State University (now University of Memphis).

In her early teens, Sharon and her sister sang together at various Memphis civic events as The Messinger Sisters. In 1964 after winning a talent contest at the Mid South Fair, The Messinger Sisters travelled to New York City to appear on The Ted Mack Amateur Hour. They didnt win, but they had an experience they remembered throughout their lives. In her 20s, Sharon worked in the music business in Atlanta, GA and at WHBQ Radio in Memphis. She later worked in the real estate business with her parents in their Memphis business, Messinger Realty Company.

Sharon was known to all as the sweetest person in the world. Even battling MS during the last 35 years of her life, Sharon remained positive and always had a big smile for whomever she encountered. Sharon will be missed but will live on in the hearts of her family and friends (and her four legged companion, Jazzy), who love her dearly. She will always be beautiful and talented and strong - and she will forever be so, so sweet.
