Roy L.
Carter
Nov 22, 1926 — Mar 14, 2022
Bartlett
Roy L. Carter, 95, passed away unexpectedly of heart failure on Monday afternoon, March 14, 2022, at St Francis Hospital – Bartlett. He was in the process of moving to an assisted living facility that very day, but God had other plans for Roy, or "Hawnee" as his family affectionately called him. He was a devout Christian, a hard-working family man, and a devoted husband and father.
He worked for over 30 years at Atlas Chemical Company in Memphis as a maintenance engineer. His love of tinkering with anything mechanical led his family to observe that he would "Carterize" anything he could get his hands on. He loved creating things, to include building a cabin from scratch at Kentucky Lake for his family, customizing a brand-new Airstream travel trailer, building a dune buggy for his son, and annually putting up a huge display of lights for Christmas.
Roy and his wife Sarah spent many years traveling the United States in their motorhome and spending their winters in Florida. He loved staying active by walking and riding a bike until his early nineties. One of his greatest pleasures was participating in the Forever Young Veterans organization with other WWII veterans. Roy was a Seaman 1st Class in the Navy, serving on the destroyer escort USS Forman in the Pacific during the Great War.
He was predeceased in death by Sarah, his loving wife of 56 years, his son Roy L. Carter, Jr. (Skip), his parents Roy and Lena Carter, and his two sisters, Alma Taylor and Mary Nell Cotton. He leaves his sister Faye Dodd, brother James Robert Carter, daughter Marcia Blackard, his granddaughters Jane Gravier, Stephanie Potter, and Christi Carter. They are joined by great grandchildren Reagan and Riley Gravier and Finn and Sully Potter.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 18 from 11:00 am until noon at the High Point Funeral Home on Summer Avenue, followed by a brief graveside service at 1:00 at Memorial Park on Poplar. In lieu of flowers the family request a donation be sent to Forever Young Veterans at 201 S. Center St. # 200, Collierville, TN 38017 (901) 299-7516.
