Robert Alexander
Duncan
May 14, 1940 — Jan 19, 2023
Oakland
Robert Alexander Duncan (aka Bob, Bobert, Honey, Dad, GranBob, Grandpaw) of Oakland, TN, died peacefully on Thursday, January 19, 2023, after a recent illness. Bob was born in Los Angeles, CA, on May 14, 1940, the second of four children born to Naomi Griffith Duncan and Benjamin Howard Duncan, Sr. A Navy veteran, he served his country and family with honor. Bob is survived by his wife of 37 years, Virgie Stringer Duncan; his brother, Ben Duncan (Brenda); sister, Betty Duncan (Tom); children, Becky Espinosa (Edwin), Patrick Duncan (Becky Ronner); stepchildren, Cecil Schmidt (Rachel), Monica Skipper (David); grandchildren, Kimber, Shane, Kelsey, Sean, Sam, Ansley, Mena; great-grandchildren, Grayson, Finley, and Lucas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joanne Duncan.
Bob's passion was art. A self-taught artist, with his studio located in his home, he had been creating art since 1959. Bob's art is primarily rural and urban landscapes, as well as seascapes. His art is impressionist, and his goal was to express his feelings by illustrating them. He created works that were not only appealing to him but to others as well. Bob was proud to have been the featured artist at Ave Maria in Bartlett, TN, as artist of the month, and his works were shown at various venues throughout the Midwest and South.
As art was not his vocation, Bob served in the military and had many successful careers, first in sales, then facilities engineering and management, and safety engineering as part of the American Petroleum Institute overseas. Bob was an Eagle Scout, US Navy Vietnam veteran, member of Disabled American Veterans, member of the Knights of Columbus, past Exalted Ruler - Elks, and a member of the American Legion.
Bob also loved RVing, reading, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his dry wit and sense of humor — especially his never-ending "dad jokes." Bob was a parishioner of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Somerville, TN.
Interment is scheduled at West Tennessee State Veteran's Cemetery on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 2 p.m. Celebration of life to follow at Jim's Place Grille, 3660 S. Houston Levee Rd, Collierville, TN 38017 , from 2:30 -5 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bob's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Wounded Warrior Project .
