Obituary

It is with deep love and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Retta Luttrell, who left this world on November 29, 2025.  She was 88 years old.

Retta Izola Phillips Luttrell was born on February 27, 1937, in Lamar, AR. At the age of 3 Retta's family moved from Arkansas to Morley Missouri where she lived until 1955.In 1955 she was Valedictorian of her Senior Class at Morley High School and afterwards she moved to Memphis. Here she met James Everett Luttrell (known as Pop after the birth of his first grandchild), fell in love and was married in September 1956.  They remained together until his death in 2015.

From the very beginning she brought warmth, strength, and kindness into the lives of everyone who knew her.  She was a devoted wife, mother, Meme, friend, and the heart of our family.  Her guidance, unwavering support, and boundless love shaped the lives of her children, grandchildren, and all who were fortunate enough to be part of her world.

Retta was known not only for her kind, servant heart, but also her fierce love and loyalty to her Faith, Family and Friends.  She made everyone feel welcome and loved.  She found great joy in being involved in the lives of her children and later her grandchildren.  You could find her in the stands at every sporting event or school function her kids and grandkids were involved in.   Her legacy lives on in the memories she created, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so freely. Her life reflected the words of Proverbs 31: "Her children rise up and call her blessed".

She was a faithful servant of God and a member of the Church of Christ at White Station for more than 60 years.  She volunteered in the Nursery for many years and was active in other ministries, with The Fellowship Committee being one of her favorite ways to serve others.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, James Everett Luttrell.

She is survived by her children, James Dean Luttrell (Joy), Danita Barnes and Gregory Lee Luttrell (Karen), her grandchildren, Holden Smith (Gabby), Ryan Luttrell (Jordan), Sarah Sharp (Aubrey), Justin Barnes, Megan Barnes, Justin Livingston, Jordan Williams, and Audra Peel (JC), and 7 great grandchildren.

Our hearts are heavy, but we take comfort in knowing that she is now in the presence of our Savior, reunited with our Pop, and surrounded by everlasting peace.

A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the Church of Christ at White Station, 1106 Colonial Rd., Memphis, TN.  Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM with the service following at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be sent to White Station Church of Christ.
