Nell
Hinson
May 13, 1924 — Dec 14, 2024
Hernando
Nellie (affectionately known as Nell) Hinson, born on May 13, 1924, in Danville, Arkansas, peacefully passed away on December 14, 2024, in Southaven, Mississippi, at Desoto Healthcare with her son Sam and daughter-in-law Shirley at her side. Two days preceding her death, she stated that she "wished she could hold on to us and just drift away", and that is precisely how it happened. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her love for her family was not just a part of her life; it was the essence of her being, radiating in all her actions.
Nell was a loving homemaker who found immense joy in simple pleasures. Her passion for gardening, sewing, and fishing, with a particular fondness for catfish, was infectious. Her favorite place in the world was anywhere she could cast a line and bask in the serenity of nature. Nell's zest for life was not just evident; it was contagious in her love for dancing, exercising, and fishing and her joy in doing those things. She always wanted to go fishing for her birthday and did so for her 100th, this time by inviting her extended family at Wesley Meadows Retirement Center, where she last lived.
Nell's proudest accomplishments throughout her life were raising her two sons and reaching the remarkable milestone of age of 100, an achievement celebrated with a certificate from the Mississippi Centurian Club signed by the Governor of Mississippi. She took immense pride in her children, Dennis and Sam Hinson, and cherished her role as a devoted mother, a role that defined her life and actions.
Nell is survived by her son, Sam Hinson; her sister, Cora Gregory; her brother, Bill Cowell; her grandsons, Nicholas and Landen Hinson; her great-granddaughter, Makayla Taylor; and her great-granddaughter, Lila Kate Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Lawerence Hinson, a World War II Veteran whom she deeply loved; her son, Dennis Hinson; and eight brothers and sisters, Sina, Walsa, Ida, Jim, Tom, Frank, Gladys, and Charlie.
Nell's funeral will be Thursday, December 19, at High Point Funeral Home on Summer Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. Visitation will be at 10 a.m., and services will be at 11 a.m. She will be buried at Memorial Park on Poplar Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, with graveside services at noon.
