Obituary

Nathan James "Nate" Dearing, III, 85, of Arlington, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025. Born on October 9, 1940, in Memphis, Nate was the son of the late Nathan J. Dearing, Jr. and Martha Rast Dearing, and brother of the late Carolyn Hunter. A proud graduate of the University of Memphis Law School in 1973, Nate remained a lifelong Tiger fan. He practiced law in Dyersburg, Tennessee, until his retirement in 2004—a milestone he often described as one of his greatest accomplishments. Nate never met a stranger. His curiosity about people and his warm, funny, and gentle nature won friends wherever he went. A gifted musician, his guitar was rarely far from reach, and he filled his days with the music he loved—folk, bluegrass, country, and gospel. Even weeks before his passing, Nate played joyfully in jam sessions three days a week with his closest friends. A faithful member of Arlington Methodist Church, Nate took part in men's Christian fellowship groups and dedicated himself to helping others. He is survived by his wife, Donna Harris Dearing; his daughter, Carrie Moring (Tommy); his son, Nathan Dearing IV; 4 grandchildren Will Moring, Matt Moring, Lucy Harris and Sydney Harris; and was preceded in death by daughter Beth Ellis. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 8, at Arlington Methodist Church, 6145 Quintard St., with visitation at 11:00 a.m. and service at noon. Through good and bad times, family was always the most important thing in life to Nate, and his loved ones cherish countless wonderful memories shared together.
