In Loving Memory of Robert Gerard Burrell
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Robert Gerard Burrell, who passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 16, 2026, at the age of 93.
Robert was born on November 18, 1932, in Newark, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann Marie Burrell; son, Robert J Burrell; his parents, Rufus and Margaret; his siblings, Raymond, John, Tommy, and Peggy; and his brother-in-law, Joe Xiques (Dorothy).
Robert leaves to cherish his memory his children, Julie A Philyaw (Mike), Nancy M Burrell, and John G Burrell (Wendy); seven cherished grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; loving nieces and nephews; extended family members; and friends who will miss him dearly. He filled the lives of friends and family with love and laughter.
Robert truly cared about his loved ones and everyone he met. Robert and Ann were married on April 16, 1955, and he continued to visit Ann at the cemetery on the 16th of every month. A devout Catholic, Robert served his faith and community throughout his life, including by volunteering as a Eucharistic Minister to the sick.
A proud Navy veteran, Robert served during the Korean War. He went on to dedicate his career to public service as a firefighter and was part of the very first paramedic team in Memphis. He earned an associate degree and taught paramedics at Shelby State Community College. Through his work with the Memphis Fire Department and the State of Tennessee’s EMS Division, Robert helped shape the EMS department in Memphis into what it is today. He was part of a generation that changed the world, and his service and commitment touched countless lives. Robert loved listening to music and managing his personal music pages on Facebook. “Never Give Up” was a phrase he shared on his page and a message that captured his spirit. In recent years, he especially enjoyed his weekly trips to Aldi. Robert will be remembered for his service, faith, perseverance, and the many lives he touched. His legacy will live on through the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
