Michael Lawrence Roper age 84 passed away on Jan 11, 2022. Mike was born Feb 20, 1937. Preceding him in death was his parents Nell Francis Roper and Harold L. Roper, a sister Carmen Roper Hatchett and an only son Michael Allen Roper. He leaves a loving wife and high school sweetheart of 64 years, Barbara Gatteys Roper, two loving daughters, Laura Ann Roper and Jennifer Roper Thompson, eight much loved grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren all whom he loved dearly. Mike was a proud graduate of Bartlett High School, class of 1955 where he was a four sport letterman that excelled in football and track. In 1953 and 1954 he was a first team All County Halfback and honorable mention All State in scoring his senior year plus serving as one of the team captains. Upon graduation he attended the University of Houston Engineering School. He next joined his father's masonry business H.L. Roper Masonry where he served a 4 year apprenticeship with Bricklayer's Union #1 of Tennessee. He had started laying brick in the summer at age 15 while in High School and worked with four of his Uncle's who were mason's also. They taught him well and he upheld the family tradition proudly. He opened his own company Mike Roper Inc. Masonry in 1969 and retired in 2003 after building many masonry structures in Memphis and the Mid South and was elected president of the Memphis Masonry Contractor's 1990-1992. He followed in his grandfather's footstep's who was also a masonry contractor, Robert Andrew Roper. Mike was licensed in TN., ARK., and MISS. He and his wife are active members of Ellendale United Methodist Church since joining in 1965. A memorial service will be held Tuesday Jan. 18th at Ellendale United Methodist Church 7205 Centralia Rd., Bartlett, TN. 38135, Visitation is 10:00 -11:00 a.m. Funeral from 11:00 a.m-12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Memphis Memory Gardens 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Road, Memphis, TN. 38134.
