Obituary

Jane Ostric, 94, of Germantown, TN, died at the Methodist Hospice Residence on October 10, 2019. She was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on November 11, 1924. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jules and Laura d'Anjou, her brothers, Byron and Robert, her sister, Marguerite (Peggy), her husband, Louis James (Jim) Ostric, and her daughter, Elizabeth J. Ostric. She is survived by her son, James P. (Jock) Ostric and her grandson, Thomas Jules (T. J.) Ostric. After contracting Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in her late teens, Jane set the course of her life to stay determinedly physically active to counter and stave off the degenerative effects of the disease. After graduating from Fairhaven High School in 1942, she attended Sargent College in Boston and graduated with a degree in Physical Education in 1946. She married Louis J. (Jim) Ostric in 1952, and they settled in New Bedford, MA, where he was an attorney and she taught Physical Education in the New Bedford school system, as well as coached numerous sports. Her lifelong love of the ocean, sailing and open-water swimming led to many joyful summer vacations with her family and many friends on Cape Cod, MA, and later on Hilton Head, SC. After her husband died, she moved to Tennessee, where she lived with her daughter and grandson. They subsequently lived in Augusta, GA, then Parklawn, FL, and later moved back to Germantown, TN. Following her daughter's passing in 2014, she was surrounded by the loving care of dearest friends Donna Abney, nurse Angela Walls, and the late Essie Winton, and the caring nurses and staff at Dogwood Creek Senior Living and at Methodist Hospice Residence. She is remembered by all who knew and loved her as a role model of absolute unwavering strength and resilience, who never complained about the daily struggles of living with MS.She instead used her strength and energy to care about others. Whether by phone or in person, she would spend hours helping and guiding friends and family through the good and the tough times. It was her deeply caring spirit that touched forever so many lives over the years. She will be dearly, dearly missed. A memorial service will be held in Massachusetts.
