In Loving Memory of Isaac Matthew Hartmann
Isaac Matthew Hartmann, age 23, was lost to suicide on September 5, 2026, in Memphis, TN.
We speak openly about the manner of his death because suicide should not be surrounded by shame or silence. Mental illness is a real illness, not a weakness, and we hope that Isaac's story will encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help.
While the way Isaac died is part of his story, it is not the whole story of who he was. He was so much more than the struggles he faced in his final years. He was a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend, and he was deeply loved by so many.
Isaac was born on August 11, 2003, in Rock Hill, SC. From the moment he entered the world, he was a great source of joy to his family. Due to his mother's military service, he lived in South Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Maryland. He was an excellent student, identified by the gifted and talented program and recognized by Young Achievers. He graduated from Nashoba Regional High School in Bolton, MA with honors in 2021. He received a scholarship and attended Furman University in Greenville, SC, for a short time before pursuing other interests.
Isaac was kind, funny, adventurous, inquisitive, smart, respectful, and loyal. He had a particular love for music, swimming, gaming, his dog Harley, motorcycles, and cars. He was a Boy Scout and practiced martial arts. He loved the outdoors and making others laugh. He liked to cook and had an interest in nutrition and wellness. He dreamed of becoming a business owner.
Isaac is survived by his mother, Julianna Jayne; stepfather, Timothy Jayne; brother, Ethan; sisters, Lilian, Abigail, and Alexandra; grandparents, Jeff and Janet Berg, Donna Kinney, Henry Hartmann, Timothy and Jackie Jayne, and Jaqueline Keys; aunts and uncles, Johanna and Darren Ehnis, Kimberly Florer, Traci Hartmann, Gwendolynn, Michael, and Ksenia Jayne, and Dakota Keys; cousins, Isabella Smith, Rosalind and Wyeth Ehnis, and Daniel and Elijah Florer; as well as other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Matthew Darren Hartmann, whom he loved dearly. We hold a confident hope that he and his father are now arm in arm in the presence of our loving Savior.
We are left with painful questions that, for now, are beyond our understanding. 1 Corinthians 13:12 reminds us that, in this life, we see only in part and that one day we will see and know fully. We trust God with the parts of Isaac's story that we cannot understand, knowing that He sees the whole picture even though we cannot. Though Isaac's life was far too short, we find comfort in knowing that the struggles he faced are now behind him, that he is at peace, and that one day our questions will be answered when we are together again.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that any gifts be made in the form of a donation to Anthem of Hope, a faith-centered organization dedicated to supporting those battling addiction and suicide at https://anthemofhope.org.
A memorial service celebrating Isaac's life will be held at a later date. Details will be shared with family and friends as they become available.
