Glenn Hugh
Hayes
Aug 20, 1940 — Feb 20, 2026
Glenn Hugh Hayes, 85, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, in his Bartlett, Tennessee home. Born on August 20, 1940, Glenn was an outspoken and extroverted member of the Silent Generation. His fierce independence led him to join the Marine Corps at the age of 17. Two years later, he would begin a 41 year career at MLGW by laying the city's gas lines before rising to a System's Operation Supervisor position over the gas and water divisions.
Glenn was a natural athlete. He began a four year boxing career in 1957 and won multiple citywide and regional championships. He was inducted into the Memphis Amateur Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. His hobbies included jogging, snow skiing, hunting, fishing, gardening, and reading history books.
The "Long Goodbye" of dementia could not take Glenn's determined and tenacious personality. Love does not need a memory to keep its presence crystal clear. After dementia took his independence, Glenn's quality of life, dignity, and care was maintained by his family until his departure. He is survived by a host of family members who miss him dearly.
Legacy is not leaving something for people. It's leaving something in people. He leaves a legacy of faith in Jesus Christ, humor, strong work ethic, discipline, and honesty.
Funeral services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery Chapel on Wednesday, February 25th, with visitation at 10am, memorial service at 11am and a gravesite service to follow.
