Elbert L.
Griffin
Nov 19, 1926 — Jan 18, 2023
Collierville
It is with sadness but also joy that we announce Elbert L. Griffin (Griff), age 96, has passed to his Heavenly home. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who passed away on January 19, 2023 at Methodist Hospice Residence after a recent stroke. He was born in 1926 in Pontotoc County, MS. He spent his life dedicated to working hard and providing the best opportunities possible for his family. Living through the Great Depression he learned many life lessons he would pass on to his family and friends.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and returned to Memphis where he worked and retired from International Harvester after 35 years, where he gained the respect and admiration of his fellow employees. He later worked for Avis and worked full time until he was 85. He was an active member of Collierville First Baptist Church where he loved his Sunday School class and his friends there.
He is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Vera Griffin, his brother Ealon Griffin, and his wife of 74 years Dale Turner Griffin. He is survived by his son Steve (Kerry) Griffin of North Carolina , daughter Kathy (Ed) Reed of Collierville, grandchildren Kelly (Daniel) Weise of Olive Branch, Kevin (Maddie) Reed of Memphis, Kristen (Jeff) Thompson of Memphis, and 5 great granddaughters, Raina and Eden Reed, River and Sierra Jo Weise, and Scottie Thompson. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins and neighbors that he kept in touch with regularly and a host of friends that were very important to him.
Throughout his life, he was known for his tenacity towards hard work, kindness toward every animal even the wild ones, his generosity and concern for others, and his unwavering commitment to his family and friends. He was fiercely independent, gave 100 percent to every job, and lived a life of integrity in the midst of difficult circumstances at times. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.
A Memorial Service for Elbert L. Griffin will be at Collierville First Baptist Church on Saturday, February 4, at 2:00 pm. A time of visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 pm. The family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Building Fund at Collierville First Baptist Church.
