Obituary

Cheryl Hays, a trailblazing public servant, a devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend, and passionate advocate for animals and social justice, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026 surrounded by her friends and family.

Born and raised in Memphis in 1952, Cheryl moved through the world with a rare and refreshing blend of grit and grace. Though her early ambitions focused on a career in fashion design, she ultimately answered a very different calling, becoming one of the first female police officers in the Memphis Police Department, courageously entering a male-dominated field during an era that rarely welcomed women into its ranks.

She paved the way for generations of female officers, though she never craved the credit she was due. Her home is filled with a gallery of awards and recognitions—honors she accepted without pomp or circumstance, preferring to let her work speak for itself. Her stories of her days as a patrolwoman were legendary; she was an engaging and vivid storyteller, capturing a time in Memphis history that few experienced as intimately as she did.

After years of service on the force, Cheryl transitioned to the District Attorney's Office, where she continued her pursuit of truth as a criminal investigator. Cheryl served 40 years in the DA's Office and retired in 2024.  She left behind a decorated legacy of integrity and an unwavering commitment to service. To those who knew her best, Cheryl was an unapologetic social justice warrior who didn't just talk about change—she "walked the talk." In a world that often asks women to be quiet, Cheryl spoke her mind with a directness and courage that was as necessary as it was inspiring.

Outside of her uniform, Cheryl's heart belonged to the Memphis Zoo. For several decades, she served as a dedicated docent, a role that was her true passion. Whether she was educating visitors about the "furry" animals or her beloved snakes, she was entirely in her element, sharing her deep love for the outdoors and all living creatures. She was also an avid and creative baker and shared her baked goods for all to enjoy (she often incorporated animal themes within them – like her penguin holiday cake).

Cheryl's life was defined by selflessness. She spent much of her adulthood as a devoted caregiver, particularly for her mother, putting her own dreams and travels on hold to ensure her family was loved and supported. While her health declined shortly before she could see all the corners of the world she dreamed of visiting, she lived a life of immense travel through her stories and the deep relationships she cultivated.

She is survived by her brother, James Hays (and his spouse Judy); many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews; and her chosen family of amazing friends—the "family" she created through decades of loyalty and love.

The world has lost a true original—a woman who spoke her mind, cared about the world around her, and never backed down from what was right. In lieu of flowers, her family and friends request that you pay it forward – invite a friend you have been meaning to see for coffee (or wine!); bake an item and share it with your office; or join a local march for human rights.

If you wish to contribute to a bench plaque memorial at the zoo for Cheryl donations can be made in memory of Cheryl Hays to the Memphis Zoo  https://www.memphiszoo.org/every-animal-every-day   You can also call the zoo at 901-333-6500.

A celebration of life will be held at the Dixon Garden and Gallery, Winegardner Auditorium, May 17, 2026 from 1-3 pm.  The address is 4339 Park Avenue, Memphis, TN  38117.
