Katharine ( Katie ) Lucille Combs Barber died on April 9, 2011 at Germantown Methodist Hospital after a short illness. She was born on December 5, 1914 in Midway, KY the daughter of Elbert Clay and Carrie Wigginton Combs. She had a twin sister, Eleanor Clay Combs, who died a few days after birth.

She was predeceased by her husband Arley Reginald Barber, her son Arley Reginald Barber, Jr., her brother and sister-in-law along with many lifetime friends.

She graduated from Ward-Belmont College in Nashville and she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority at the University of Kentucky.

She lived in Hazard, KY most of her life and came to Memphis 5 years ago to be closer to her daughter, Carole. Katie, as people from Hazard called her, had a lifelong love of music and spent hours playing the piano and organ until a few years ago when her hands were too arthritic for her to do so. She played dinner music on the organ at La Citadelle for 25 years. She was an avid Kentucky Wildcat basketball fan until her death. Until death, she was an extremely outgoing "people person" and had a keen sense of humor.

She is survived by her daughter, Carole Barber Smith ( Philip ) of Memphis; her daughter-in-law, Cynthia Barber, Mt. Sterling, KY; her grandchildren Shannon Perry, Kilgore, TX; Suzanne Perry Smith ( Michael ) Longview, TX; Barry Barber, Bowling Green, KY, Brian Barber ( Cecilia), Arlington, WA; Clay Barber ( Melissa ), Mt. Sterling, KY; and Carrie Barber Miller ( Brent), Mt. Sterling, KY; great-grandchildren Spencer and Tucker Smith; Whitney, Reagan and Abby Barber; Bianca, Ava and Christian Barber; Jacob Hudson Miller.

If people she knew wish to do something in her honor, people may send memorials to her lifelong church, First Presbyterian Church, 160 Broadway, Hazard, KY 41701.
